On 1 December 1989 Christian Cottard opened his first pâtisserie on Place Nationale in Antibes, having learnt his craft from his father, a celebrated Menton pastry chef, and with big names in cooking such as Alain Ducasse. In 2014 he and his wife, Andréa, opened La Closerie in the centre of Antibes, a veritable gourmandise hub comprising a pâtisserie, restaurant and school. Now 30 years after he started out, his son Clément has opened his own boulangerie-pâtisserie a few metres away, at 13 Place Jean Aude. "He's become a competitor! We're very proud of him. People often ask us if it isn't too difficult working with family but our story proves it works wonderfully. I think if we set our children a good example, passing the torch on comes about naturally." To celebrate Maison Cottard's 30 years in business, a special Christmas dessert featuring mandarin from the garden and chocolate joins the traditional festive treats.
