Remodelling of a property overlooking the Figuerolles creek: renovation of the main house, demolition and rebuilding of a second, construction of a new gatehouse and pool house, and landscaping of the pre-existing idyllic hanging garden above the steep sea cliffs.
Passing under the gatehouse arbour one will come to an area planted with native species. The bare stone of the façade is designed in continuity with the perimeter wall, hiding from view the second house with its living roof at the hidden heart of the property. The lime-washed villa and its terraced grounds will look out to a typical local landscape. The terraces are paved, with stone walls and steps; each level having its own ambience and particular Mediterranean tree species.
The jury’s opinion
The stone extension to this year-round home by the sea is a very restrained, low-key project. The layout is plain, with a living room in the central part and a bedroom on either side. The design is simple and forceful, looking onto a reconstituted Mediterranean garden. The architect has avoided the easy trap of a neo-Provincial solution.
