The new head of Marseille’s state-funded drama centre, the Centre Dramatique National la Criée, took up his post in July. He takes over from Macha Makeïeff, who drew up a lavish programme for the 2022-23 season before leaving. Robin Renucci, actor, producer and man of the theatre, will oversee two flagship productions: Oblomov by Nicolas Kerszenbaum (5-8 January) and Jean Racine’s Phèdre (3-10 March). He means to continue the participative project in which “the theatre is a tool for the people, to elevate them individually and collectively. Creation is foremost in this house of artists. I am keen to genuinely propagate drama, in the theatre and outside. Meeting Marseille residents, breaking down barriers between neighbourhoods to create a new way of writing together, relayed by numerous local and regional theatre companies. I want to attract to La Criée people who have never been to the theatre before, give them a taste for the texts, the stage, for reading. Have different kinds of people mix and mingle, get close to them. They can teach us much.” Renucci, who has taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique, is sure to inject all his energy and talent into his work in Marseille.
