Le Luberon

  • Further north but definitely south

The high ridge of the Luberon massif boasts an array of delightful hilltop villages set in well-tended countryside. They have retained their rural feel despite intensive tourism. Guigou painted these landscapes, film-makers love them: Louis Malle for Les Amants, Vincent Becker for L'Été meurtrier and Ridley Scott for A Good Year. Even Mr. Bean spent his Holiday in Oppède-le-Vieux. Every summer, Pierre Cardin fills the Lacoste quarries with music. When Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence hit the shelves in 1989, it aroused a fever of enthusiasm for the area and its landscapes (freezing in winter, sweltering in summer), from the grey stone of Gordes to the bright ochre quarries. Many young business people, managers and creatives allergic to the bling-bling of the Riviera have invaded the Luberon via Avignon airport and the Aix and Avignon TGV rail stations. But the first wave of incomers arrived in the '50s to '70s. They were the artists and champions of built heritage who saved the region from depopulation. In fact, the population has almost doubled since the creation of the national park in 1977. Yet there are still a few unspoilt gems for fans of the real rural France to discover. And in the mix you'll also find superb 5-star hotels coming into bloom as the season advances. Let's take a trip to northern Luberon to recharge our batteries the elegant way.
