Auguste Renoir bought the Collettes estate in 1907 largely for the hundred-year-old olive trees within the grounds. He had a kind of glass hut built, approximately five metres square, with fully opening panels to enable him to paint as closely as possible to nature. After the painter’s death, the studio was abandoned, collapsed, and finally demolished. Architectural firm MRA Patrimoine faithfully reconstructed this garden studio, respecting as best possible the finishing details, hangings, parquet, glazing, and colours, relying on a few old documents and photographs and by studying the 1930s “Cadastre”. The only departure from the original project was creating access for people with reduced mobility.
The jury’s opinion: Like Rehabilitation-Transformation, the Heritage category, through the reconstruction of Renoir’s studio, shows the mastery of the architect’s work.
