REBOUND PRIZE

She started as a school teacher in the first Parisian school to specialise in students with High Learning Potential (HLP). Her first experience was the decisive factor when moving to the South of France. “When I asked myself what I liked about this job, I realised that we were admitting children damaged by an ill-adapted system and giving them back their confidence,” enthuses the woman whose first name of Italian origin means “warrior”. Ilda Coppa thus turned to the coaching profession and was assigned to a public secondary school with a high drop-out rate. “I set up workshops to help students become more self-aware. There were nine of us at the outset, and we grew to 90 students, which created an ultra-positive dynamic in the school,” continues this mother, herself an HLP. This success led her to create her organisation in 2017: d-Potentiels, an alternative education centre offering young people support and course solutions.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR OTHERS
Except that, after acquiring new premises in Juan-les-Pins, COVID-19 hit. “A pupil costs about €8,000 a year when you are a private organisation, which is a lot of money for parents to find and you get paid very little as a teacher. Having large premises means big responsibilities in terms of security. In the end, I was relieved that the crisis enabled me to rethink my activity,” adds Ilda Coppa, who has bounced back by reinventing her offer. She created a new structure with her partner. After raising funds, they launched their brand new programme at the national and French-speaking level over 12 months: a combination of individual coaching, digital content, face-to-face immersion, and a stimulating community. “I grew up in a dysfunctional family and suffered the disconnect of being HLP. Then I became aware of what others were teaching me about myself, that it didn’t matter what the degree was. What mattered was the ability to adapt. Caring for young people is my greatest achievement.”

d-Potentiels

At the head of d-Potentiels, Ilda Coppa wanted to provide a solution for as many young people as possible to live their adolescence differently and prepare themselves for the world of tomorrow by developing their psychosocial skills—known as soft skills in business. Her programmes aimed at 12–25-year-olds—particularly HLPs—and their parents use fun-based interactive methods. Themes include self-confidence, communication, emotional management, academic success, orientation, HLP, financial intelligence, ecology, and entrepreneurship. It is a mainly online course involving individual and face-to-face coaching, making it possible to support young people in a personalised way and in groups.
