This summer, the Hôtel Boadès is hosting a sensitive and unique dive into the memory of Aix-en-Provence. The exhibition Cézanne's Aix, presented by the CEPPIA association and the Ely fund, offers a chance to rediscover the city through hundreds of photographs from the legendary Studio Ely, covering the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
Founded in 1888 by Henry Ely, who trained with the Lumière brothers, Studio Ely has captured over two million images that now constitute a living memory of Aix. It features Cézanne's familiar landscapes, such as Sainte-Victoire and the Lauves studio, as well as scenes of daily life, portraits of Aix residents, and significant historical events. The correspondences between certain photographs and the Aix master's paintings add a fascinating dimension to this visual journey.
Through ten thematic chapters, the exhibition allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of Aix at the turn of the century: washerwomen by the water, students at the Collège Bourbon, official inaugurations, moments of popular life... so many images that reveal the social and cultural richness of this era. This tour is part of the "Cézanne 2025" program, led by the Musée Granet, and brings the city's history to life through the unique lens of photography.
More than a retrospective, Cézanne's Aix is an invitation to travel through time, where the intimate meets the great History, and where each snapshot becomes a fragment of memory to share.
