He popularized the famous slogan "Black is beautiful." African-American photographer Kwame Brathwaite helped redefine the aesthetic canons of Black beauty in the late 1950s and early 1960s, in response to the dominant culture. A space for creation, and a source of pride, embodied by these women with their symbolic hairstyles and jewelry, the Grandassa Models. From then on, people no longer straightened their hair; skin color was celebrated. Creator of the African Jazz Art Society and Studio and inspired by jazz, funk, and blues, Brathwaite organized fashion shows and became the official photographer for Stevie Wonder and the group The Stylistics. The exhibition is the photographer's first retrospective organized in Europe.
