This exhibition looks at Colombian painter Botero from the angle of his affinities with Picasso. A strange dialogue on the face of it, but a closer look shows it to be entirely pertinent. Portraits, still lifes, nudes, borrowings from art history (an artist guessing game!), great historical events and more personal ones, and the worlds of circus, dance and bullfighting. Fernando Botero says it was bulls that started him painting. As a teenager he dreamed of being a torero and used to study Picasso’s work with great interest. But not only Picasso; Cranach, Ingres and Velasquez inspired him too. In this exhibition we can contemplate Boteros and Picassos side by side.
