Electric vehicles

  • A solution for the city and beyond

Low-carbon transport is one way of improving quality of life. It is a perfect response to today’s environmental challenges and is a genuinely sustainable alternative.

The Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence authority and the Bouches-du-Rhône Département Council are considering the ambitious but logical goal of switching to electric vehicles for their public transport system. Diesel out, electricity in! Marseille’s No. 82 bus route has been all-electric since 2016; it was the first in France to make the switch and is a model of its kind. Natural gas vehicles are another renewable alternative being considered, using gas derived from methanisation of urban waste and sewage sludge. The electric solution is to be encouraged for private transport too. For the necessary infrastructure, the Métropole authority and the Département plan to establish 475 recharging points within the Métropole area by 2021. There will also be subsidies for car owners switching to electric: in addition to the €6000 «ecological bonus» (one of the first measures resulting from the Grenelle Environnement multiparty agreement of 2007) and a possible €2500 conversion bonus, the Département is granting €5000 for the purchase of a new electric vehicle.
