Valtram, le tramway périurbain entre Aubagne et La Bouilladisse.

Bridging the gaps

  • A transport web for everyone

The Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, one of the largest such «metropolises» in the country, is a patchwork of high-density urban areas, rural areas and protected natural spaces. How can its various labour markets and living areas be brought closer together?

To tackle that challenge, the Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence (an administrative structure created in 2016), is setting up an inter-city express bus network, the Réseau Express Métropolitain. Like the existing Aix-Marseille bus service, a model of its kind, the new bus services will get «leCar+» certification once the necessary bus-only lanes have been created on the motorways (work on several such routes is planned for completion by 2020-2021). Other plans include transitways and tramways in the Métropole’s various towns. For example, a major extension of Marseille’s north-south tramway, the Chronobus and Val’Tram projects in Aubagne, the extension of the Zénibus rapid transit bus between outlying small towns north of Marseille, other busway projects in outlying areas, another tramway extension, and work on the Marseille metro to improve automation, safety, security and disabled accessibility. All these transport modes will link up with the Réseau Express Métropolitain bus network at specially created interchange nodes and transfer points.
