 Marc Antoine Serra

Constantly questioning the boundary between the real and the imaginary, this artist draws us into his photographic world, letting the images speak for themselves. Marc Antoine Serra lives and works in an old forgotten monastery in the heart of Marseille, a few yards from Saint-Charles railway station. He received us in his "cell" where the walls are covered with his photos, some of which would doubtless have seemed provocative to the former occupants of the place. Marc-Antoine, born in the Alpilles in 1971, defines himself as a beginner in the art of photography. Before, he was creative director for various advertising agencies and in the printed press in Paris, but the light of the South drew him back here. He photographs models he chooses for their spontaneity and their natural, almost statuesque, seemingly aimless poses. He also shoots the rocks at Baie des Singes and the walls of Château Lacoste. "I don't set myself any rules. Everything fires my enthusiasm and feeds my curiosity: the strip cartoons I did as a teenager, my graphic arts work, meeting people, literature ... and colours, faces, places, journeys. What constantly recurs in my work on image and video is the question of the real – matter, people, which you fix in a static moment, trying to detect the limits."
