Le passeur de Dieu (God's boatman): the title of Michel-Marie Zanotti-Sorkine's new novel could equally well describe the author, a fisher of souls who devotes his many talents to the service of his faith. This is a man who studied history at university and sang in Paris cabarets before answering the vocation that had been calling him since childhood. At the age of 28 he quit the night-time world to head for the light, spending periods with the Dominicans and Franciscans and attending the Angelicum pontifical university in Rome before joining the secular clergy. At the age of 40 he was ordained a priest in Marseille and took over the parish of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul with its imposing church at the top end of the Canebière. A multicultural setting for a man whose mother was a Russian Jew and his father an Italian-Corsican blend. And he's worked wonders there: a church that was almost deserted when he arrived is now the busiest in Marseille. People flock to hear the word of God from this fervently inspired priest. But that is not enough for Michel-Marie Zanotti-Sorkine, who also writes, sings and makes full use of the new technologies. He has written 11 books and a play, produced CDs and music videos, and posts sermons on his website http://delamoureneclats.fr. But he is a priest first and foremost, because what's most important to him are meetings with people, celebrations and confessions.
