Gaël Vitetta designs and makes bespoke neoprene wetsuits in his Marseille workshop. It was his mother Marie-Jo who sparked his passion. A former supervisor at the Comex wetsuit plant, she launched Land-off in 1999 to re-establish the direct link between divers and their wetsuit maker. Gaël Vitetta makes the models by hand in his workshop, in a sequence of ten operations. He offers one-piece, two-piece and short wetsuits for a wide range of sports from canyoning and rafting to diving, undersea hunting and hydrospeed. Over the years he has perfected his models and adopted new materials in response to demand from customers, who may be consumers looking for quality equipment for their sport or professionals such as naval firefighters. His neoprene comes in 3.7mm or 9mm thicknesses and in black or camouflage pattern, imported from Taiwan (Sheico brand) or Japan (Yamamoto). This is high-tech neoprene: Yamamoto's, which Land-off has been offering for a year now, incorporates limestone powder. Land-off's success is due to its position in a niche market that is of little interest to industrial manufacturers and its highly competitive value for money (a bespoke wetsuit in Sheico neoprene will set you back €277 incl. tax).www.land-off.com
