Monaco's art show

07.2014

This summer, two collectors of contemporary art give the Principality an opportunity to dazzle, through history-making exhibitions at the Grimaldi Forum and the NMNM.

Does François Pinault need introducing?
We aren't talking here about the businessman but about the man who has loved and collected art for 40 years now. A man in tune with his times, whose collection of nigh-on 3000 artworks embraces a historic 20th century as well as the 21st and regularly goes on show in international exhibitions or at the Palazzo Grassi and Palazzo Punta della Dogana, the two Venetian monuments that he purchased in the early 2000s. From 12 July to 7 September we can admire some of his treasures in Monaco, at the Grimaldi Forum's big summer exhibition displaying 43 major works from his collection, 15 of which have never been on public display before.

"The heart of art"
Who better than Martin Bethenot, director of the Venice museums and the François Pinault Foundation, to shed some pertinent light on this fabulous collection? The Artlovers exhibition is considerably more exciting than its name might suggest: "The theme of this hanging is that art feeds on art," its curator explains. "That artists have always drawn inspiration from works by other artists." An implacable observation: some best-selling international artists' work does not simply "come to them in a creative flash". Homage, critique, parody, citation, rereading, appropriation… the visit turns into a fascinating exploration that takes us to "the heart" of art history. Another great collection, originating in Switzerland and based in Monaco, enables the NMNM to present until 2 November an unprecedented exhibition on the famous English art duo Gilbert & George, who themselves conceived the hanging for Villa Paloma's three floors.
