Her pudding-bowl haircut and the glasses she designed herself make her look itself a signature. An industrial designer by training, Matali Crasset rethinks objects and spaces so as to create lifestyle scenarios that shatter conventions. One example is her When Jim Comes To Paris bed complete with lamp and alarm clock, another the Pouf Digestion seating blocks created from a holdall. Crasset's creations can be seen from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to the MoMA in New York. Here in the south of France her name is associated with fitting out the children's mediation space at the MuCEM in Marseille and architectural realisations in Nice such as the Hi Hotel and the Sledge House. Now, for the launch of The Cultural Gallery in what used to be Monaco's artistic-crafts district, she unveils nine ceramic vases wearing capes! Rather than starting with a sketch to seek beauty, Crasset explored the vast library of shapes that is the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres porcelain factory. The vases she found the most anthropomorphic she combined with others so that the second "clothes" the first. Repeating the operation has resulted in a procession of colourful figures. Discover these method-conceived objects until 30 June.
